Forex Calculators
Forex Calculators
StratBase.ai includes four dedicated calculators built for forex traders: pip value, lot sizing, swap costs, and profit targets. Each tool connects directly to the 27 forex pairs available on the platform, so you work with real market structure rather than generic formulas.
How Forex Calculators Fit Into StratBase.ai
Backtesting a forex strategy requires more than entry and exit signals. You need to know the exact monetary weight of each pip move, how much capital a position actually risks, what overnight holding costs over a multi-day backtest, and where your price target sits in absolute terms. The four calculators handle each of these independently, but they chain together — output from one feeds naturally into the next.
Pip Value Calculator
A pip's dollar value differs across pairs because of varying quote currencies and exchange rates.
Inputs: | Field | Example Value | |---|---| | Currency Pair | GBP/JPY | | Account Currency | USD | | Lot Size | 0.10 (mini lot) | | Current Exchange Rate | 192.450 |
How to use in StratBase.ai:
- Open Tools → Forex Calculators → Pip Value
- Select your pair from the dropdown — all 27 pairs are listed
- Set lot size to
0.10 - Enter the current mid-rate, e.g.,
192.450for GBP/JPY - Click Calculate
Output for this example:
- 1 pip = $0.52 USD
- 10 pips = $5.20 USD
- 50 pips = $26.00 USD
- 100 pips = $52.00 USD
GBP/JPY pips are worth less per unit than EUR/USD because of the JPY denomination — this calculator makes that immediately visible.
Lot Size Calculator
Once you know pip value, you can size positions precisely around a risk budget.
Inputs: | Field | Example Value | |---|---| | Account Balance | $8,500 | | Risk Per Trade | 1.5% | | Stop Loss Distance | 35 pips | | Pip Value (per lot) | $5.20 per mini lot |
StratBase.ai steps:
- Navigate to Lot Size tab within Forex Calculators
- Enter account balance
8500 - Set risk to
1.5%— the field accepts both percentage and fixed dollar input - Type your stop distance:
35pips - The pip value field auto-populates if you ran the Pip Value calculator first in the same session
Output:
- Maximum risk: $127.50
- Recommended position: 0.70 mini lots (7 micro lots)
- Actual risk at this size: $127.40
The 10-cent difference from rounding is shown explicitly so you know the position is slightly under your limit, not over it.
Swap Calculator
Holding a forex position past the daily rollover incurs a swap charge (or credit, depending on direction and interest rate differential). In a backtest covering 20+ days, swap accumulates meaningfully.
Inputs: | Field | Example Value | |---|---| | Pair | AUD/USD | | Direction | Short | | Lot Size | 1.0 standard | | Broker Swap Rate (Short) | −4.8 points/night | | Holding Period | 14 nights |
Steps in StratBase.ai:
- Open Swap Calculator tab
- Select
AUD/USD, set direction to Short - Enter your broker's published short-swap rate:
-4.8 - Set nights to
14, which includes two Wednesdays
Output:
- Daily swap cost: $4.80
- Wednesday surcharge (×3 instead of ×1): +$9.60 extra across 2 Wednesdays
- 14-night total: $86.40
Brokers apply triple swap on Wednesdays to cover Saturday and Sunday settlement. The calculator accounts for how many Wednesdays fall inside your holding window automatically.
Profit Target Calculator
Define a dollar target first, then work backward to the exact exit price.
Inputs: | Field | Example Value | |---|---| | Target Profit | $200 | | Lot Size | 0.70 mini lots | | Pip Value | $3.64 per pip at this size | | Direction | Long | | Entry Price | 1.08450 (EUR/USD) |
Steps:
- Open Profit Target tab
- Enter
200in the profit field - Lot size and pip value carry over from the Lot Size session if already calculated
- Set direction to Long, entry price to
1.08450
Output:
- Pips required: 54.9 pips
- Target exit price: 1.08999
- Price distance: 0.00549
You now have a concrete limit order level rather than an approximate round number.
Tips for Accurate Results
- Always update exchange rates manually before calculating — the calculators use the rate you enter, not a live feed
- Swap rates vary by broker and change with central bank decisions; pull fresh figures from your broker's contract specifications before each session
- Chain the calculators in order: Pip Value → Lot Size → Swap → Profit Target for a complete pre-trade analysis
- For pairs involving JPY, verify your broker quotes swap in JPY points or USD — the unit affects the swap total significantly
